Windows 8.1 Direct Access Clients need the ability to use local DNS Resolution

My company is migrating from Windows 7 laptops to Windows 8.1 Enterprise Surface devices. We currently have Direct Access implemented as a remote access solution. We use the Connectivity Assistant for the Windows 7 laptops. This our end users the ability to easily check the status of their direct access connection as well as some useful troubleshooting tools.

In Windows 8 it appears that the connectivity assistant is built into the operating system and can be accessed from the networks interface. My problem is that it seems very limited compared to the Connectivity Assistant 2.0 we installed to our Windows 7 laptops. The "Use local DNS resolution" feature is the most important feature that we do not want to lose.

Is there some alternative method to use local DNS resolution in Windows 8 while connected via Direct Access?
