VPN Home Windows 8.1

I'm trying to set up a VPN that I can use from my laptop anywhere to my home PC. The laptop is running Windows 7 enterprise and the PC is running windows 8.1 pro. I've followed a few websites showing simple instructions on how to set up windows 8 as a VPN server, forward some ports and apparently voila but it's not working for me.

To test I've got them both on the same network and I've set up an incoming connection on Windows 8 and forwarded the ports: 1723 for TCP and 500 for UDP and 1701 for UDP.

From the other machine when I run portqry using the WAN address of the router it shows 1723 as FILTERED. I think this means it could be open, could be closed so that might be the problem but I can't find anything on how to fix it.

When I try to connect to the VPN on the PC from the laptop using the WAN address and port 1723 I get and error that says.

Port opened.

Error 868: The remote connection was not made because the name of the remote access server did not resolve.

There are options to log and I've had a look at the logs but they're pages long and I don't know what I'm looking at. I've googled alot for the error code but haven't found anything to resolve it. I've got both firewalls turned off for now.

The connection is ADSL with internode – I haven't been able to find anything that says they block this kind of traffic.

The problem could be on either end of the connection and I'm not really sure where to go next. Any suggestions?

Edit: Also, is it possible that I'm barking up the wrong tree to get the functionality I want?
