How Do I Connect To A Workgroup?

Windows 8 Pro

I thought I had configured the system to be part of a workgroup and was able to see other computers on the LAN.  Now I cannot see them.  I have a mapped network drive and that still works but when I click on Network from Explorer I only see the local machine.

If I go to the Network and Sharing Center under View your active netwoks it has

Network                                       Access Type: Internet
Private network                          HomeGroup: Ready to create
                                                    Connections: Ethernet

I cannot delete the Private network.

I can access the internet.

If I go to Map Network and type in \\<computer name>\ and press Browse... I will see the computer listed and can select a share.

Control Panel --> System has my Workgroup listed.

Advanced sharing settings/Private
Turn on automatic setup of network connected devices. Checked
Turn on file and printer sharing. Checked
Use User accounts and passwords to connec to other computers. Checked

I do not want to create a HomeGroup -- I just want to be able to access the LAN and see the machines on it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
