Windows 8.1 SMB1 Not Working

$

We have software that is written in visual foxpro and some of our clients have been getting corrupted index's and missing records and from past experiences we've found that OPLOCKS is the cause of these issues.  To test if this is really is the issue we turn off OPLOCKS on SMB1 and disable SMB2/3(because there is no way to just disable OPLOCKS on SMB2 or 3) on the computer that is serving the data. We've recently just ran into the issue where if a client has both a Windows 8.1 computer acting as the server and a Windows 8.1 as a workstation when we disable SMB2/3 on the Windows 8.1 that acts like a server the Windows 8.1 workstation can no longer access the file share on the server through the \\computername\share.  We can still access the file share from computers that are Windows 7 and lower.  I also made sure the SMB1 client is enable on the workstation.

Here is how I disabled OPLOCKS and SMB2/3 on the server:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\EnableOplocks = 0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\SMB2 = 0

On the workstation I made sure SMB1 client was enable by running this command:

sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/mrxsmb20/nsi
sc.exe config mrxsmb10 start= auto

Is there something I'm missing that is causing file sharing not to work on just SMB1 with Win8 to Win8 setup?

Duplicate devices shown on Media Streaming Options page

(Moved from Microsoft Community).

For starters I'm no expert with networking tasks, but just some basic info:

On a wired home network

Windows 8.1 on Dell XPS8700

I've been playing with the library streaming functionality on Windows 8.1 since I realised I could stream music from the PC to Xbox 360, and recently I noticed that after changing the 'show devices on:' option from Local network to All networks, there are four entries on the devices list which all have the name of my PC (not including the 'Media Devices on This Pc...' entry). For now they're all checked 'Allowed'. Clicking on each of the names reveals no available info other than a MAC address which varies slightly for each device.

Out of the 4 I know are 2 which each have the physical addresses of the Ethernet and Bluetooth adapters, so that seems to make sense. I don't recognize the other two, but I'm guessing they could be related to the wi-fi adapter built into the computer. I can't confirm this because I don't know how to check it's MAC address from the network connections page under control panel like I did for the Bluetooth and Ethernet. Just for reference, I've disabled the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi adapters on the network connections page because I have no use for them.

I want to know how these particular devices in the list work in relation to streaming media to devices I know of around the house, and weather leaving their 'Allowed' boxes checked is particularly a good idea.

Virtual Hosted Networking Windows 8.1

$

I am trying to Host a Virtual Network in order to connect my Xbox 360 to my wifi because my wifi connection requires you to access a web browser and authenticate information before it will let you connect. The only solution I have found would be to authenticate the information with my PC then host a virtual network, connect my 360 to the virtual network, and then I should have internet access through my PC. Problem is, when I connect my 360 to my virtual network it attempts to test the connection and reports an error stating "Can't obtain an IP address from your router or modem." I go to the configure network option and the IP Address is displayed as if it has been auto assigned. The Subnet mask is displayed too. The Gateway address is not and just consists of 0's. I opened admin cmd and ran ipconfig /all. I get the following: Wireless LAN adapter Local Area Connection* 2: should be my hosted network and as you can see, the gateway address is completely blank which would explain why my 360 is not getting a gateway address. Please help. What's going on here?

Problem accessing smb share since change to Windows 8

$

Hy,

I have a smb share folder on my router (I connect a pen and is shared in the network), with no password.

I am able to access from Windows 7 and Linux, but not from Windows 8.

The reported error is:

The device or resource (SERVER) is not set up to accept connections on port "The File and printer sharing (SMB)".

Which is obviously wrong, since I can access it from other OS.

How can I solve this or get more information on the underlying issue.

I've read several threads in here about similar problems, but nothing worked in my case (services are running, smb-cifs is active and there's no error about IPRStackSize and I turned off firewall and antivirus).

Thanks in advance

VPN not working - Missing device

I cannot get VPN working in Windows 8.1 Pro N.

If I create a new VPN connection it shows the message "Unavailable - device missing".

The device manager shows a warning for "WAN Miniport (SSTP) #2" with following message:

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

{Operation Failed}
The requested operation was unsuccessful.

And in the syslog I have two errors which might correspond to my problem:

RasMan Event 20030
Remote Access Connection Manager failed to start because it could not load one or more communication DLLs. Ensure that your communication hardware is installed and then restart the Remote Access Connection Manager service. If the problem persists, contact the system administrator. The system cannot find the file specified.

Service Control Manager Event 7023
The Remote Access Connection Manager service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Offline Files are the Only Visible Ones

Offline files are great for seeing files on the server just like they're attached to your computer when you're away from the office.  However, if you use a VPN to actually go online, only the offline files appear.  How can I see the online files too?  Why is the "offline files" program preventing me from seeing all the other files on the server?

Windows 8.1 client and Windows Server 2003

Hi we have a Server 2003 domain with XP clients. I now have new PC's with Windows 8.1. I made the PC join the domain. I have given the new Windows 8.1 PC the same network settings like the XP-one it replaces. I can view all the network drives, I can join the domain, printing, ... But when I try browsing the internet it doesn't work. I can do a ping to 8.8.8.8 and www.google.com and it answers but when I surf to the internet it won't open any internet page and time-outs. The 2003 domain is one without a dhcp-server so all static ip's. I  have attached this PC to our DHCP-network and set the IP-settings to automatic and it can browse the internet. I have given a XP-pc the same network settings and it can browse the internet. How can I solve this?

Kind regards!

Windows 8.1 - Mobile BroadBand connection not showing up

I have two 3G dongles (same brand - Huawei e367) that I share with someone.

The one dongle always shows up in Windows 8 networking as Mobile Broadband(...) in the networks charm.

However the other dongle does not, even though it does connected to the internet via same software and i can definitely access web pages etc ...

this is problematic because services such as OneDrive does not work with the dongle that does not show as mobile broad band in the network charm ... even if i can surf the internet via browsers ...

any idea how to get the 2nd dongle to also show up?

Thanks,

Ian

p.s i also use the mobile broad band in network settings to share it with other computers via wifi, but i can only do so with the first dongle? why?

as i say it is exactly the same dongle and i actually use the same 3g sim card when interchanging ..

Windows 8.1 Pro workstation will not connect to our domain

My situation has me puzzled.

I've got a workstation that I want to be added to the domain. I got it added no problems. When I go to login on my own user account on the domain, it works as it should.

As I hand off this workstation over to a user and had them log into it, they mention that "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request."

I checked their group policies on the domain controller and its setup exactly like the others.

Most of our machines are windows 7 pro, and they all are able to login to the domain just fine; including the person in question from before on a windows 7 pro machine. For some reason however, using the same credentials and same everything else, it refuses to attempt to try to connect to our domain.

If I'm able to connect using windows 8.1 pro on my account, while a normal user can't, I suspect its a group policy issue? The user is a member of "domain user" group so I'd think that would be the only real ticket they would need. Again they can use their own credentials under windows 7 pro and connect up fine, and my very own credentials for windows 8.1 pro machine logged in and carried out group policy information as well.

---

Well now here is something, just as I was typing this up, I made a test account that has domain admin rights and low and behold, it was able to log in though it doesn't appear that group policy mapped drives or shortcuts were placed.

I guess the question now is what would a domain admin have over a domain user that would allow a domain admin to log in and not a domain user that is specific to windows 8.1 pro.

A certificate could not be found that can be used with this Extensible Authentication Protocol. (Error 798)

Hi,

I posted this on Azure forim with no luck maybe here is a better choise.

When trying to connect a windows 8\8.1 client with a vpn connection for azure virtual network we get the fallowing error.

"A certificate could not be found that can be used with this Extensible Authentication Protocol. (Error 798)"\

I'm fallowing this msdn article about point to site vpn on azure. according to it the certificat is good for both win 7 and win 8.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn133792.aspx

this is the commanf to build the client certificat:

makecert.exe -n "CN=ClientCertificateName" -pe -sky exchange -m 96 -ss My -in "RootCertificateName" -is my -a sha1

When runing the installtion of the certificat on the client the defult crtificate store is "Automatic", It does not metter if I leave it on Automatic or choose any of the other options (personal, trusted issuers ...) I always get the same error.

Thanks

"No Internet Access" indicator, but internet access works

$

We've got a few machines at a couple different clients that have the windows networking systray exclamation mark indicating limited network connectivity.  The supposed error is "no internet access", though the internet works fine in every case.  It is a very visible issue generating a lot of complaints, and the clients have a tendency to associate it with all kinds of other unrelated problems.

To clarify:

  • Not all machines have the icon
  • Problem machines all have the same basic setup as non-problem machines
  • Some problem machines are win8, some win7
  • They don't share common hardware specs

I have tried several things, including:  reset ip stack, give manual ip settings to network adapter, disable ipv6, disable/re-enable adapter, all without success.

I don't know where to go to troubleshoot this.  Is there a log with this info?  Is the network connectivity check process well documented somewhere?

How to stop "NetCfgTrace" ETL session on windows 8 constantly dumping netcfgx.0.etl at high rate? (it re-appears when deleted/stopped)

$

Hi,
I noticed constant disk activity - reads and writes to c:\windows\inf\netcfg.[0,1,2,3,4].etl files at about 30kb/sec.
I found the source: in the Performance Monitor -> Event trace sessions - there was session called "NetCfgTrace" with the trace provider "{41e8e8f3-7b6d-488e-b350-f696dd24afb6}"
If I stop (and even delete this session) it gets re-created and resumed in a few seconds.

My question is: how to find out who (which service) starts this session? Hopefully then I'll be able to figure out how to disable it.

Thanks

Alex.

More info: I have visual studio 2012 installed for windows phone development with HyperV - I suspect it could be related.
It's win 8 pro 64.

How to access to the server resources with a SSTP VPN?

I can connect to the server through a SSTP VPN, but I don't know how to access to the server resources. I have a shared folder in the server, "myserver\d", but I am not be able to access from the client computer.

In the server, in the conections, when I add the adapter for the incomming connections, in the properties of the IPv4 protocol, I set the the adapter gives to the clients IPs. I try with a range of 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.199 and with 192.168.2.1 to 192.168.2.100. The server is in the 192.168.1.2 address. however in both case I can't access to the resources of the server.

What I need to configure to do it?

Thanks so much.

windows 8.1 pro - embedded VPN client. Certificate Common Name error severity set to error instead of alert.

Hi,

I have been using juniper Network connect for a few years now.
after upgrading to win 8.1 i decided to use the embedded VPN client to connect to the corporate network.

the facts:

the server i use to connect to, using the juniper NC (the sign in page) ,is not issuing the proper certificate CN name for the target server.
i.e sa.bezeq.co.il instead of the server i try to connect to 212.***.***.***
and a security alert is popped up asking if i want to proceed. - which i choose YES and it connects without any problems.

but when i configured the windows VPN and tried to connect an error pops: "certificate CN name does not match the passed value"
the problem is that it pops an Error instead of an alert and not allowing to proceed.
i cant find my way around it..

is there any security policy set to ask if i want to proceed anyway or disregard the name difference ( just like in the Juniper Client )?
or any other workaround, registry key, powershell cmdlet .. anything? “

after days of research i found that in development environment there was some kind of solution using a parameter flag called INTERNET_FLAG_IGNORE_CERT_CN_INVALID

another related topic about win phone 8 development mode using SocketSslErrorSeverity parameter set to ignore.

but the above ideas are not for desktop win 8.1 pro edition without serious tweak using code. - which i absolutely want to avoid.

I would really appreciate your professional help in suggesting the easy workaround.

Regards

Itsik
