Computer downloading 7GB daily from microsoft.com

I have a user who's PC is causing network issues. The PC is clean, no viruses.

Every day it downloads 7GB to 12GB of data from ws.microsoft.com. I don't really think this is Windows updates as the computer is set to download updates from a WSUS server.

The PC downloads tons of CAB files from Microsoft every day.

The PC is setup to download windows updates from a local WSUS server.

Below is a log from our firewall that shows two of the downloads requests.

2014:09:05-02:08:22 srcip="10.xx.xx.71" dstip="23.62.6.41" url="http://bg.v4.emdl.ws.microsoft.com/emdl/d/2014/04/abm_2d7c6aff63def980ab09d6471321109de1fcea58.cab"
2014:09:05-02:09:15 srcip="10.xx.xx.71" dstip="23.62.6.48" url="http://bg.v4.emdl.ws.microsoft.com/emdl/d/2014/07/abm_47b6e2af25877f3841f5bcf9dc75312650b6dfd2.cab"

Below that is the PC's config to use the WSUS server for updates:

C:\windows\system32>reg query HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate ElevateNonAdmins REG_DWORD 0x1 WUServer REG_SZ http://LDS1:8530 WUStatusServer REG_SZ http://LDS1:8530 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

C:\windows\system32>ping lds1 Pinging LDS1.labdepotinc.local [10.xx.xx.15] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 10.xx.xx.15: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

The only way I've been able to stop it is to completely block microsoft.com for this PC. None of the other PCs on the network exhibit this behavior.

Any ideas why this PC is downloading so much data every day?

Thanks,

Travis

Windows 8.1 Not Seeing Ubuntu Server

I have been running a file server with Ubuntu Server 14.04.1 as the OS and Samba 4.1.6 to share the files. I was able to connect to the server and access all of its drives from both my desktop and laptop running Windows 7. I upgraded my laptop to Windows 8.1 Pro and am now unable to connect to the server or its drives. The server does not show up at all during network discovery.

I am still able to connect to the server and drives from my desktop that is still running Windows 7. I tried connecting via a direct path from my laptop and got error 0x80004005 and Windows cannot access \\Server message. I have verified that the laptop is on the same workgroup as the server and file sharing is turned on and works for connection to my desktop. Is there a new setting in Windows 8.1 that would block my Ubuntu server?

WiFi - Under Network Connections - Disabled. Not Local Administrator. Should not be possible.

I've posted about this already but still have no resolution.

We continue to daily have users call with the WiFi on their Windows 8.1 tablets disabled. This is under Control Panel > Network Connections. Greyed Out, Disabled.

The user account on these tablets IS NOT a a Local Administrator. Attempting to manually enable or disable the connection prompts a UAC window asking for administrator credentials.

I've attempted going through logs and trying to find out how this continues to happen but have found nothing. We need an answer to HOW this is happening. It should not be possible and we have never had the same issue with Windows 7.

Windows 8.1 connected by VPN, contents of mapped drives "disappears" intermittently.

I have a client with a Windows 8.1 Pro laptop who works in a satellite office and connects to the main office via VPN. The main office is running SBS 2011.  The user has his G drive mapped to a share on the server and will be working on 2 or 3 files, he'll then go to open the G drive to find another file and he'll see that only the files/folders he's actually been working on are showing up, the rest of the contents of the drive seems to "disappear".  I believe this is caused by the VPN dropping connection (not proven yet).  The problem is that even if you reconnect to the VPN, those files don't re-appear... or they might be back when he comes back into the office after doing some calls.  We can make the files instantaneously re-appear if he grabs his notebook, walks across the street from the satellite office to the main office and plugs into the hardwired network... but this is less than practical, and impossible if he's actually on the road somewhere.

He does not have "offline files" active for the G drive, nor do we really want to do that... but I'm thinking that Windows is going into some sort of half-baked automatic offline files mode when the VPN goes away.   I've played with registry and group policy settings in reference to offline files in the hope that would rectify the issue but to no avail.

We don't particularly care that the files are unavailable when the VPN isn't connected, the client understands they aren't local files.  What is really the big issue is that activating the VPN doesn't make the files reappear and that there doesn't seem to be any consistent way of "forcing" the issue except to physically hardware to the lan segment the server is on.

This was working just fine on the client's old system under Windows 7 Pro, but just since moving to a new laptop with Windows 8.1 it has become flakey.

Any suggestions hints or tips are appreciated.

Cheers,

Mike

P.S. When I say the files "disappear", they are just invisible to this user... they are still physically on the server and accessible by all other users on the LAN.

Aventail SonicWall VPN failure Windows 8.1

Having been forced to upgrade due to equipment failure, I dove in to windows 8 Feb 2013. This was automatically  upgraded to 8.1 last fall. I have never been able to log on work VPN. Persistent failure when loading SonicWall cache cleaner "applet failed to load".

I have had my tower in to IT for nearly a week without even their success.

I have Norton 360 and Spybot Search and Destroy. similar behavior before and after Spybot installation

I have been advised to revert to IE 10 (not avalable)

I have tried with Chrome, Firefox, Opera.

Chrome will not upgrade due to "group policy inconsistency" All advice calls for grpeditor.msc (I don't hve that file)

None work.

Sonicwall is one of the VPN clients in 8.1

I followed one of the links above (Aventail connection not working...) and was redirected to an account setting page. There was no link to the actual entry on that page, so that was a fail.

This is a stunning disendorsement. IT is not going to win 8 as they upgrade from XP

Must I abandon windows 8 family and buy a new win 7 machine?

My windows XP home netbook does the VPN connection as usual. It too has Norton 360

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Win 7 and my remote desktop connection (RDC) stopped working.

When I click on RDC it does not load at all. No window opens. I have tried stc /scannow - no issues were found. What could be an issue here?

Can see but not connect to other computers on my home network

New laptop running 8.1 replaces crashed one (also ran 8.1). After setup, can see the other computer on Home Network (uses Windows 7). That one can also "see" the new laptop. ( Both computers appear in the network folder). Neither will connect to the other. Get "cannot access message, check name etc."

Both computers are in same Homegroup, tried all the tests mentioned in support . . .everything seems set properly. Ran through all the network and homegroup diagnostics fine. Tried connecting with both firewalls disabled.

Is there a solution I'm not aware of? Others seem to have similar if not identical problem.

VPN not working on windows 8.1, is working with windows 7

$

I'm using windows server 2012 R2 essentials. I set up VPN using the wizard from the dashboard. The VPN is working fine on all my windows 7 pro client machines. Recently I added a new laptop with windows 8.1. When I'm on the internal network I can approach the server without problem from this machine. However when using VPN from an external network I the VPN is not working correctly.

It states that it is connected. It was first stating that it was a public network. I changed this to private using changing an register key as I thought that maybe this was the problem. This however doesn't solve the problem. I do get an IPv4 address if I view the connection details. It however no network or internet excess trough the vpn. If I try to ping my server IP adress (I do not know it this should work or not trough VPN) I get no respons.

Does anyone know what might be the problem or what I should do to make this work?

I find it strange as windows 7 is working without problem.

EDIT: I also lose connection to the VPN after a couple of minutes.

How I configure the VPN in the server to be SSTP?

I am trying to créate a SSTP VPN in Windows 8. I créate a new incomming connection in the networks management. But in the properties I can't set the type of the VPN, only select the users that can be Access thorugh the VPN.

In my client, I create a new VPN connection. In the properties I can set the type of the VPN. If I select automatic option, the the connection is PPTP. If I select IKEV2 I can establish the connection to. If I try to use SSTP I can't connect, alhough I create a self signed certificate in the server, export it and import the public certificate of the server in the client. The error is that the server denied the connection.

My doubt is, I set the type of VPN in the client, so I can select a unsafe security such as no certificate needed, and the server accept this kind of connection.

I think that the type of VPN must be set in the server to select the best option and the the client use this type of the VPN.

Is the Windows VPN unsercure? Or I am doing something wrong?

Thanks.

Windows 8.1 client and Windows Server 2003

Hi we have a Server 2003 domain with XP clients. I now have new PC's with Windows 8.1. I made the PC join the domain. I have given the new Windows 8.1 PC the same network settings like the XP-one it replaces. I can view all the network drives, I can join the domain, printing, ... But when I try browsing the internet it doesn't work. I can do a ping to 8.8.8.8 and www.google.com and it answers but when I surf to the internet it won't open any internet page and time-outs. The 2003 domain is one without a dhcp-server so all static ip's. I  have attached this PC to our DHCP-network and set the IP-settings to automatic and it can browse the internet. I have given a XP-pc the same network settings and it can browse the internet. How can I solve this?

Kind regards!

Can't access Shared network drive - error 0x80070035

Hi ,

I hope someone can help me with this because it is driving me mental!

We had a fault with are internet yesterday and after the modem was rebooted, no one can now access any of the shared drives and we get the following error"The Remote device or resource won't accept the connection." " The device or resource (Drobo 5N name) is not set up to accept connections on port "The file and printer sharing (SMB)".

I have tried the following:

1. Enabling ipconfig /flushdns and renew.

2. Enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP

3. I also checked LAN settings and they were all correct.

4. I then went on windows programmes and features and made sure SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support was checked which it was.

Does anyone have any suggestions!?

Thanks,

Louise

"Always available offline" not working

$

Hi,

I seem to be having some similar issues to other posters, but the advice given has not helped so far.

I have a folder on my NAS drive, which is formatted as NTFS.  I can connect to it, and have mapped it.  However, when I try to make one of the sub-folders "always available offline" the option is greyed out (on the ribbon, and missing from the context menu).

If I navigate to a folder on my other computer, I am able to make it available offline, so offline files is working.

Does anyone have any advice please?

Thanks in advance,

Mike.

No network on reboot - Connection Details for Adapter Blank/Empty

$

I've been dealing with this issue for over a week now, and while extensive Internet searches have found similar situations, none exactly matched my situation, and none of the suggested fixes had any positive effects. Here's my exact situation:

1.) System Specs:

OS: Windows 8 Pro

CPU: 3.60 gigahertz Intel Core i7-3820

RAM: 64GB DDR3 -1333

Disk Space: 2.6TB on 4 SSD and 2 HDD

Network Adapters: (2x) Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet

2.) On computer startup (whether cold start, warm start or "forced" reset), when I get to the lock screen, the network icon has thedreaded "yellow triangle" overlay displayed. I can log in using my Windows Live credentials with no problems, but that same warning overlay is on the network icon in the taskbar, as well, and I have absolutely no WAN or LAN access. Both network adapters show up in Network Connections as enabled (as opposed to disabled or "network"), and when I double-click either one (or if I right-click and select Status), I get the status popup, but it's completely empty. And by that I mean nothing at all is displayed in the main section. In order to get my network connection up and running, I have to disable at least one of the adapters and then enable it. Once that's completed, I have both Internet and LAN connectivity, but if I reboot for whatever reason, it all goes away, and I have to do the same dance once more.

3.) Things I've tried (not necessarily in order):

a.) uninstall/reinstall NIC drivers, using not only current, but also "next-gen" and "last-gen" versions - no help

b.) Disable or uninstall one or the other of the NIC's - also no help

c.) Disable IPv6 on one/both adapters - foolish, I know, but it was suggested, so I tried it - no help

d.) install the "original" Windows 8 native drivers - no help

e.) Created a logoff script to disable the adapters, and a startup script to enable them - no help (though manually running the same instructions froman elevated command prompt does work, but it's faster to disable/enable them from the Network Connections window - and yes, I made sure that the shutdown/startup scripts had admin access - I just think they were being executed at the wrong stage of the boot process)

f.) Ran SFC /scannow from an elevated command prompt - no errors found

g.) Checked the event viewer for information regarding this issue, and nothing shows up - not even "information" entries.

h.) Ran System Restore to a date/point before this first occurred - no help

Now this isn't my first rodeo with networking errors, and while I'm certainly no "IT Guru", I like to think I know my way around the tech well enough to be able to suss out the vast majority of networking issues, but this one has me stumped. This is a reasonably new system for me, having purchased/built it back in March, but it's also a "2 generation" upgrade over the old box, so there are no "known good" replacements available to try. Also, one NIC is built into the MoBo, while the other is in the PCIe sound card. Both came as a "package deal", and are supposedly cross-compatible with each other (ASRock assures me this is true). I also didn't bother testing the cables, routers or modem, since this appears to be a software or driver problem, and I'm leaning heavily toward it being with the driver, somehow.

Well, that's my dilemma. I tried to be as complete as possible with the information, but as I'm only Human, I may have missed something. I'm more than happy to provide any other information that may be necessary. If anyone has any ideas about something that I may have missed (short of a full wipe/reinstall, of course - that's just below initiating Global Meltdown on my priority list), or knows what may be causing this, I would greatly appreciate the sharing of knowledge. :)

Name resolution of own hostname on mulithomed machines

$

Hi,

I have some multihomed computers (multiple nics connected to different subnets). Windows identifies internet access and the domain on the correct nic (let's call it LANnic). That nic is the only one having a default gateway configured. traffic over the other nics is intended for their local subnets only (so no static routing).

the nics are configured with automatic metric and I've  changed the binding order so that the topmost nic is LANnic

I want the local machine to be able to connect using FQDN on teh ip used by LANnic (there is an application listening on that ip only). Onsome machines, if I 'ping' the FQDN it returns an IP of one of the other nics (=not good). The difference seems to be in the physical network layout.

I know the machine will never contact DNS to resolve it's own hostname, but I do not know how it picks the appropriate IP. Also, the info I find about this topic is very unclear, some refer to bindings, others to metric and even routing tables.

If possible, I would like to solve this issue without setting static metrics to ease configuration and troubleshooting.

All input is highly appreciated :)

save as hangs in windows 8.1

Since upgrade to Windows 8, cannot save .rdp files under the Remote Desktop Connection application on the Desktop

$

Since I upgraded to Windows 8, I am no longer able to save individual Remote Desktop Connection files as .rdp files. I am talking about the traditional Remote Desktop Connection application on the Desktop that was in previous Windows versions, not the Remote Desktop App from the Windows 8 store.

When I try to click on the Save button I get "An error occurred while saving to file"

When I try to click on the Save As button I get "Unable to open connection file" with the file address being where I tried to save it with the file name at the end.

Also when I upgraded to Windows 8, my .rdp files disappeared from my Documents folder.

I need to create different .rdp files for different programs that my employees get into on my server. Now I have to hand type all the info each time into the Programs tap on the Remote Desktop Connection window, because I can't save to an .rdp file.

I like the Remote Desktop App from the Windows store but it won't let me designate specific programs to use using standard dos notation (ie c:\program files\ etc..). It just goes to my server desktop.

I want to promote Windows 8 to my employees but I need either .rdp files for the traditional Remote Desktop Connection or the ability to open specific programs using dos notation in the Windows Store Remote Desktop App.

Unable to change IPv4 adapter settings -- COM surrogate fails

Hi folks,

I have an HP notebook I use for network troubleshooting etc. It is about 1 year old and was delivered with 8.0 and subsequently upgraded to 8.1 a few months ago. It does not have the recent 8.1 Update update installed.

When I try to set a static IP address on the Ethernet adapter I get a pop-up after closing the adapter properties dialog saying that the COM surrogate as stopped work. I can close this popup but I can't close the Network Connections page. I get an event 1000 error in Application event log that says netcfgx.dll is faulting.

I know that at one time I could change the adapter settings with no trouble, but I've installed a number of monthly updates since the last time I tried.

Any ideas?

VPN SSTP: error 8007274C (timeout)

I have a remote computer that I can go throw my myurl.com.

I have activate IIS and then I configure a connection to that allow incomming conections. If I use this command:

netstat -aon

I can see that the computer is listening on 0.0.0.0:443, that I think that is correct.

Also, if I use this command:

netsh http show ssl

I can see the bind of the certificate with the 0.0.0.0:443, that it
is using the certificate that I have installed and create with OpenSSL.

I try to disabled the firewall, but it does not solve anything, it
was expected, because one advantage of SSTP is pass through the
firewalls.

I have use a cirtual machine to configure a Windows 8.1 in the same way and in the LAN I can connect, so the problema is when I try to connect through internet to the server that is outside my lan.

So I don't know why I get this error.

Thank so much.
