Incoming VPN connection not working on Windows 10, PPTP port 1723 not listened.

I upgraded my workplace server from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro, and cannot connect anymore to server's incoming VPN connection: I receive Error 807. Previously till upgrade, connection to Win 7 Pro worked perfectly - router is configured correctly (ports tcp1723, udp500, gre protocol). I also tried to put computer in DMZ, disabled firewall, but nothing helped.

I did little research:

1. Tried same setup on Windows 7 Professional on other computer: and I could connect from every machine I tried.

2. I tried netstat -a, and on Windows 10 I didnt find port 1723 in list! On Windows 7 there was port 1723 listed and listened.

3. I checked also Services.msc - all remote and RAS services are running and seems to be similar in Win 7 and Win 10.

Maybe PPTP port number is changed in Windows 10? Or there are some other protocol used for VPN?

PPTP server not listening on port 1723

I am having a strange problem with the built-in PPTP server in Windows 8.1. Every time that the machine is started with a cold boot, I can't connect to the VPN. I run netstat -ano, and confirm that it is not listening on TCP port 1723. It is not listed at all, so it doesn't seem to be used by another app. RRAS is running, and restarting the service does not change anything. Additionally, the "Incoming Connections" in present in the adapters page, and all the settings are correct.

However, the issue is temporarily fixed by doing a restart. After a warm boot, the server is listening on port 1723, and I can connect to it with an outside client. This rules out all network and firewall issues on the server side, and all other issues on the client side.

From my testing, it seems that if the server machine is shut down, and started from a cold boot (even after just a couple of minutes), it never listens on port 1723. I have tried setting RRAS to delayed start without success. But so far, it always listens on port 1723 after a warm boot (restarting).

Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening? Are there any diagnostic tools that I can use to pinpoint the problem? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Can't set netsh int tcp set supplemental

Hello!

Seems like I can't operate within netsh int tcp set supplemental preferences. When I try to set congestion provider the 'old way' with

"netsh int tcp set global congestionprovider=ctcp"

in elevated command prompt, Windows 8 saying that I must do it now with

"netsh int tcp set supplemental"

But that doesn't work either. All I can do with that new command is set template, but only one is available - "internet", and it's already set to it.

I want to set ctcp, ICW and minrto, but I can't, here's what me getting:

http://s10.postimage.org/jrpkudg53/suplemental.png

The syntax is right, even example doesn't work.

The problem exists in Windows 8 CP, RP and in this build.

Sorry for my English. Thanks in advance.

Manage Mobile Broadband connection with VPN

Hello,

I've been looking into this subject for a couple of days now but I can't seem to find an answer to a problem we're experiencing at work. - I have a feeling there might be a simple solution for this but i can't get quite put my finger on it.
Here goes:

We're testing a new Dell 2-in-1 device (Latitude 7350) that has a build in Mobile Broadband modem (Model: Dell Wireless 5810e Mobile Broadband).
After installing just Windows 8.1 Update 1 Enterprise Edition x64, with all the latest updates and enabling Mobile Broadband - that is, pressing 'Connect' and entering the PIN-code- it does manage the connections as we wish, as it should, as described by Mircosoft– I’m happy about that.

Though, once we install our VPN software (Global Protect 2.2.1) and make a connection, a switch between sending data over Mobile Broadband and WiFi does no longer happen

What happens is that once the VPN-tunnel is build over 3G/4G.. the data is kept being send over the Mobile Broadband connection, even if Windows has (also) connected to our WiFi.
We have to manually press "Rediscover network" on our VPN software -or 'Disconnect' at the Mobile Broadband - before the tunnel is rebuild and data is transferred over the WiFi network.

We assume that this is a Global Protect issue and have made a case at Palo Alto Networks, but we are looking for a temporary workaround.

I notice Windows does no longer ‘Disconnect’ the Mobile Broadband connection automatically when Wi-Fi is connected and both have the status ‘Connected’. I believe this behavior is not a bug and wanted by Mircosoft.

However I assume there might be registry settings telling Windows to keep Mobile Broadband 'Connected' even when Wi-Fi is 'Connected'. Or maybe a 'trigger' that writes a 0, 1, 2.. in a registry telling "Wi-Fi is connected"

I would write a script to change these settings to 'Disconnect' Mobile Broadband if another connection is made..

FYI: We tried this with a 3rd party software, 'Vodafone Mobile Broadband' but the Dell Modem is not supported

If you guys have any suggestions, please let me know.

Greetz

Unwanted TAP-Windows Adapter V9 and TAP-Win32 Adapter OAS drivers installing

After upgrading to Windows 8.1, things were working fine until about 100+ updates came through... and now these TAP-Windows Adapter V9 and TAP-Win32 Adapter OAS drivers are installing over and over again. I uninstall the drivers and they come back, I disable them, and they re-enable themselves. I have looked up answers to this issue, and I do not use a VPN...so none of that applies to me.

The unfortunate part is that I get constant interruptions with my internet and don't even want to touch my laptop hardly anymore because of this...but I need to because I am trying to start a business and get back into school. The only way I can get the internet to work again is to disable the drivers, and troubleshoot my wireless adapter. It renews the wireless adapter, the internet works for anywhere between one minute to an hour before I have to troubleshoot again.

HELP?? How to I block those drivers? There needs to be a Microsoft Removal Tool and a major update...

I tried to add a screenshot, but it took so long to verify me that I had already deleted it after 4 days.

Windows 8.1 Network Share 0x8007003b Error Copying Files

Hi All,

I'm having an issue when copying files from a Windows network share. If the file is above 5MB it will start copying and then after a minute or two I will get an error such as:

Interrupted Action

An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.

Error 0x8007003B: An unexpected network error occurred.

The network share is in a different office and is accessible over a point-to-point VPN, so the connection is not that fast.

But before everyone tells me to start diagnosing the router and or VPN please take note of the following:

  • My colleague who is running Windows 7 can copy files from the network share fine
  • If I run a Windows 7 VM on my Windows 8.1 laptop I can copy the files across fine

I also know it isn't an issue with this particular file share. I set up a little lab, where I had one VM which had a shared folder and 2 other client VMs one running Windows 7 and one running Windows 8.1. I limited the bandwidth to the two client VMs to a similar speed we see across our VPN. The result was that the Windows 8.1 failed with the same error above, whereas the Windows 7 copied fine.

There is also a noticeable difference visually when copying using Windows 8.1 and Windows 7:

  • Windows 7 - The progress bar progresses smoothly giving the current speed and estimated time remaining
  • Windows 8.1 - The progress bar progresses in a jumpy fashion. E.g. it shows no progress, then after a minute it jumps and shows 16% progress, then shows no further progress, then jumps by another 18%. There is no estimated time remaining.

I ran Wireshark to investigate what was going on at the network layer. I see the following behaviour:

  • Windows 8.1 - The file is copying fine then all of a sudden there are a lot of TCP dupack packets. After which the Windows 8.1 client sends a RST packet and then the error pops up.
  • Windows 7 - The file is copying fine then you also see a load of TCP dupack packets, however no error is displayed and it continues copying fine.

I'd appreciate any help with this I'm hoping there are some settings I can change to make Windows 8.1 behave more like Windows 7!

FYI originally posed here (but was advised to ask on Technet) - https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-files/windows-81-network-share-0x8007003b-error-copying/300bc9a4-597b-402a-b885-9dd6f6fb51a2

Thanks,

Zak

Windows Firewall Windows 8.1 and Windows 10

$

Previously in Windows 7 and Vista, you could configure Windows Firewall to allow specific outbound traffic via "svchost".  For example, to allow outbound traffic for Windows update, you would allow the program "%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe" with "wuauserv" selected under "Apply to this service".

In Windows 8.1 and 10 that functionality no longer exists.  Creating such a rule results in network connectivity errors for both OS.  If a rule is created to allow "%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe" and "Apply to services only" windows update also fails (meaning there is more than the defined services at work here).  The only way I can get it to work is if I just allow "%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe" completely or "%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe" and"Apply to all programs and services", which defeats the purpose of me trying to block all services, but those that require network access.

Any help in addressing this problem is appreciated.

Port Forwarding Issues - Minecraft Server

$

Hello world!

I could use some help setting up my minecraft server so that others can connect to it and not just me. I have used the cmd to see my ipconfig numbers and then used this page to help me make a static ip:

http://portforward.com/networking/static-ip-windows-8.htm

I used the ip that I had made static using the guide link above as a way to connect to my server and as a result I'm the only one who can connect to my server. No idea why.

What I meant to do was to make a static ip that would allow for say people across the country to be able to connect to my server that I have been so meticulously implementing.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Am I using the correct ip? Should I have port forwarded my external ip somehow? Is there a way to make my server be connectable from say across the country instead of only me and without paying a service to do it for me?

DNS Resolution Failure with SonicWALL Mobile Connect VPN and Domain Joined Computer

Hi Guys,

Was hoping someone can help me. I'm having this exact issue: https://support.software.dell.com/kb/sw13532 and the workarounds aren't working. Logged a case with SonicWALL and they referred me to log a case with Microsoft. So, before going down that lonely road, maybe someone has seen this before.

In short, when a workstation connects to the SonicWALL SSLVPN; DNS resolution to internal DNS servers via the VPN fail. If I dis join the computer from the domain, DNS resolution works fine via VPN. This only affects SonicWALL SSLVPN clients that are joined to the domain.

Any suggestions or hopefully a link to the Windows Update\Patch?

Thanks,

Jacques

Problem with VPN and UMTS modem: Error 633 modem already in use

$

Hi!

I have used Windows 8 for weeks now. Last week all my VPN connections and UMTS modems suddenly stopped working. Before they were working perfectly. Whenever I try to connect to our company's SSTP VPN I get an error 633 "The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use". I get the same error when trying to connect to the internet with my UMTS stick. Both connections (VPN and UMTS stick) work fine on other computers.

This is what I already did:

  1. Restarted the PC (of course) - did not help.
  2. Recreate the VPN connection from scratch - did not help, same error.
  3. Looked into device manager (with and without devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices) - no errors shown there.
  4. Created a RAS log (see relevant pieces below) - I did not find the root cause of my problem there.

Anyone having an idea how I could analyze the problem any further?

Rainer.

Here is the RAS log:

Windows 8.1 cannot map to network drives

First off, this issue randomly happened out of nowhere. Nothing was changed on my system before this problem happened. I used to be able to access company server network drives no problem now I cannot.

I have seen other threads on here similar issues but not the same.

Below are some notes on my scenario and things I have done already to try and resolve it.

1. I can ping the server name and IP no problem, but cannot map it.

2. It is only local to my computer, my domain account can access them on other computers and our terminal server.

3. This same computer was an image of another windows 8.1 machine and that still runs no problem.

4. I have enabled netbios and network discovery.

5. Turned off windows firewall, even though I know that's not an issue because it was working before.

6. Anti-virus and other similar programs would not affect it.

7. Changed network connection ( different cable or cable connection somewhere else, priv wifi, etc)

8. I can RDP to the servers as well.

9. Windows updates have been run numerous times as well.

I don't know if there is any adapter or how virtual network drives work or are enabled, but if that exists maybe that's my issue?

I do have a very last resort scenario. I have a backup DR image of my system I could restore to if absolutely needed, but would very much like to not do that as it's about 3 months old and would take a while for me to configure things back to the way I have it now.

Please help!

How do I clear / delete hostednetwork configuration?

This question has come up before – but with no proper answer – unless I’m missing something?
I configured a WLAN hostednetwork on my lads laptop, but it seems to be causing issues with his connection to WiFi router.
So how do I clear / delete the hostednetwork configuration and return the laptop to previous config.?
There does not appear to be anyway of doing this – no delete / clear commands on the netsh command for WLAN.

Remote Assistance 8.1 expert to 7 novice, graphics updates are S-L-O-W

Text is fine, shows in realtime, but page graphics are so slow I can't keep up with what the Novice is doing most of the time while I wait for the page to update (complete refresh/loading).

I tried the old, well-known trick:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=highlyrestricted

None of that speeds it up.  Are these commands to be performed only on the Expert machine or on both?

Both expert and novice machines are on broadband connections.

Suggestions?

I have a Toshiba Satellite with Windows 10 that connects with a 'privacy' network while the Lenovo Laptop has Windows 7 and connects with either a homegroup or workgroup only. How do I connect them together? They don't seem to work with the privacy network.

Support Extended Protection for Authentication on Windows 8.1

We need to turn off EPA at the client level to get some of our apps to work in Chrome using Windows integrated authentication using ADFS 2.1 as Chrome doesn't support EPA. This applies to the Office 365 portal as well as some apps we wrote ourselves that use SAML.

 As per https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/976918 we've set

Key Name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA
Value Name: SuppressExtendedProtection
Type: DWORD

to 0x01 and it works on windows 7 / IE9. Doesn't even require a reboot, just to restart Chrome.

This doesn't work on windows 8.1 / IE11.

Some questions:

- no mention anywhere of whether EPA applies on Win 8.  All MS article about EPA refer back to the base KB for XP /2003 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/968389).

- does SuppressExtendedProtection work on Win8.1

are the registry values 0,1 and 3 or 0, "0x01." and "0x03." as suggested in the KB976918. (you can't type these in - you have to paste them in and the reg editor converts them to some other hex value...)

How to view WiFi password, stored in the Microsoft cloud?

For a time I used Windows 8.1 on my laptop, i found my WiFi pass automatic synced. But as I installed Windows 10 Technical Preview, I found that my pass wasn't synced. Is there a way to extract it from the cloud somehow? The point is I have no access to my router now, and there is no other way. Thanks.
