ARP answer from wrong client with wrong MAC address

$

Hi everybody,

since friday we have a strange problem with some clients and ARP answers. We notice that our switch recognize wrong MAC addresses on some ports.

We use wireshark to see what happens and we get the following:

5 clients:

  1. 172.30.71.6 (XX:XX:XX:F7:52:75)
  2. 172.30.41.1 (XX:XX:XX:38:d1:a8)
  3. 172.30.63.1 (XX:XX:XX:c2:b0:b9)
  4. 172.30.14.1 (XX:XX:XX:88:c7:4f)
  5. 172.30.59.1 (XX:XX:XX:7b:67:4d)

Wireshark runs on client 1 (172.30.71.6, promiscuous mod off)

Client 5 (172.30.59.1) send a broadcast arp question (who has 172.30.41.1 - tell 172.30.59.1) and client 1 (172.30.71.6) is sending ARP replies with src = XX:XX:XX: 38:d1:a8.

172.30.41.1 (XX:XX:XX:38:d1:a8) is offline (network cable removed) and 172.30.71.6 has no entry of 172.30.41.1 (XX:XX:XX:38:d1:a8) in his arp cache.

The clients run Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

Why we get these phenomenon and how can we solve it? Is there maybe a problem with some updates of the last patchday?

Thanks for the reply and kind regards

Bernd

Enable Recycle Bin on mapped network drives

$

A few years ago I discovered how redirected user profile folders in Windows get Recycle Bin protection, even when the folders are redirected to a network location. This was a huge find for me, and I used this feature to add Recycle Bin coverage to some of my mapped network drives. I shared this information on another forum here:

http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/16974-Tip-Network-Recycle-bin

Today I figured out a better way to achieve the same goal that doesn't rely on user profile folder redirection, and am sharing that information for other users to try out. You might want to take a look at these forum topics for additional information:

The standard disclaimer applies - this might break stuff. I've only tested in Windows 8, and my testing is limited. Try this at your own risk.

This is what I've learned (or think I've learned - I might be wrong):

  • Windows Vista and later store the configuration settings for the Recycle Bin for redirected user profile folders in this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BitBucket\KnownFolder
  • Under this key are separate keys for each redirected folder that is protected by the Recycle Bin. The keys contain the configuration information for each protected folder, and are named to match the GUIDs for "Known Folders." A list of the Known Folder to GUID mappings is available in one of the links above.
  • The registry also contains a list of "known folders" at this location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions

So, I reasoned that if I could create my own custom "known folder," I could add that to the list of folders that were protected by the Recycle Bin and protect any mapped network drive I wanted. So I looked at the list of existing "known folders" and created a key that was similar to the Documents key. I then fiddled with the values in the key until I narrowed it down to the minimum number needed to make the recycle bin work.

This .reg file will protect a mapped X: drive with a ~50GB recycle bin. You should modify the file to fit your needs:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{9147E464-33A6-48E2-A3C9-361EFD417DEF}]
"RelativePath"="X:\\""Category"=dword:00000004"Name"="XDrive"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BitBucket\KnownFolder\{9147E464-33A6-48E2-A3C9-361EFD417DEF}]
"MaxCapacity"=dword:0000c7eb"NukeOnDelete"=dword:00000000

A few things of note:

  • The GUID in the above .reg file {9147E464-33A6-48E2-A3C9-361EFD417DEF} came from this PowerShell command: "{"+[guid]::NewGUID().ToString().ToUpper()+"}"
  • Each "known folder"/Recycle Bin combination requires a unique GUID. If you don't want to use PowerShell to generate a GUID, you can use an online GUID generator.
  • I don't know what the "Category" value does, but the key I copied had it set to 4, and that works, so I didn't test any other values.
  • The "Name" value is required, but is not the name that will be shown if you right-click on the Recycle Bin and select properties. (At least not in my environment.) In my environment, the name that is shown is the name of the network drive.
  • Making this change adds a "Location" tab to the properties page of your mapped network drives. I suspect this could be removed by changing the "Category" value, but didn't bother to find out.
  • I only tested with mapped network drives. I suspect this would work with UNC paths as well, but I didn't bother testing.

I hope you're as excited to find this as I was to figure it out. Let me know if this works for you. I now plan to deploy the registry keys with Group Policy Preferences and will update this forum post with any information I discover.

Best regards

--Russel

Update: I am now using Group Policy Preferences to deploy the needed registry keys, and all my mapped network drives are now protected by the recycle bin.

Update 2: I have tested now with UNC paths, and this works fine. I still use mapped network drives, but if your environment requires UNC paths instead, you can use them. Note however that if you have a mapped network drive that points to a UNC path, and you protect the UNC path with a registry change, if a user deletes a file from the mapped network drive that points to that UNC path, the file will be permanently deleted. See below for more details.

Windows 8.1 File Explorer unexpectedly closes when on a network drive.

Hi,

I am facing an issue with a user where they are unable to keep a window of File Explorer open when on a network drive. It will stay open for a short period of time and then close.

When browsing on the local machine or  directly to the share via the UNC path the window will stay open.

Here is a link which shows the issue in which I am facing. But we are using Server 2012 as opposed to 2008 r2.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/e97da3d3-6201-4b32-96f2-bcb7099a37e9/windows-81-file-explorer-unexpectedly-closes-when-on-a-network-drive?forum=w8itpronetworking

The fix which was highlighted on the above link seems to already be in place. Yet the issue is still occurring.

Is there any reason as to why this could be happening? There seems to be nothing been mentioned in Event Logs.

BugCheck 0x139 KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE in NDIS.sys / NetIo.sys

After installing updates from December 2014 on a handful of company laptops, I am receiving consistent bugchecks in either NDIS or NETIO once a system sits idle for approximately 20 minutes.  All the machines are running Win 8.1 Pro, and are up to date from WindowsUpdate.

In doing some forum searching, I see some similar references from a few years back (~2011) about issues with OpenVPN clients (which these machines do have), but since they are over 3 years old at this point, I doubt the issue is the same as this configuration has been working fine up until ~2-3 weeks ago.

Hitting up the forums here to see if either anyone else is seeing this problem.

Thanks in advance...

This is always caused by SonicWALL's NetExtender. It never used to do this upon until a few days ago. I post it here because it can't be NetExtender's fault, if it was working before. It happens any time I connect. Sometimes it doesn't even get to complete the connection. Memory dump got me this...

PROCESS_NAME:  ccSvcHst.exe

CURRENT_IRQL:  2

ERROR_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0xc0000409 - The system detected an overrun of a stack-based buffer in this application. This overrun could potentially allow a malicious user to gain control of this application.

EXCEPTION_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0xc0000409 - The system detected an overrun of a stack-based buffer in this application. This overrun could potentially allow a malicious user to gain control of this application.

Probably caused by : NETIO.SYS ( NETIO!NsiEnumerateObjectsAllParametersEx+20d )

NetExtender logs don't look like it was aware anything bad happened.

Fix for - Cannot access NAS Drives, \\Share\Folder is not accessible or "Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found"

Subject

Cannot access NAS Drives

Cannot access network attached storage

Error accessing NAS

\\Share\Folder is not accessible

Error code: 0X80070035 The network path was not found

Hi all,

I fixed a stubborn networking issue and hopefully someone else can benefit from all the frustration I have experienced over the last few days.

Some background. This was a workgroup network not a domain client/server. Also, Windows HomeGroup wizards were not used - just accounts and passwords. I have five NAS boxes for storage and backup. These NAS boxes use CIFS or SMB file systems. IP address are assigned through DHCP. It is a very simple yet secure workgroup net. Everything was OK then it hit the fan.

I installed a new router after the old one failed. I powered down the entire network, cabled up and configured the new router. On my old Vista notebook PC all five NAS devices were OK. In Vista, Windows Explorer, I could access all the folders and files on all the NAS boxes.

However on all the other systems, Windows 7 or Windows 8, I would get errors. In Windows Explorer I could see "\\MyNAS\Share\" but cannot navigate to it.

I would get an error:

"\\MyNAS\Share\ is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. The specified network name is no longer available."

Or

"Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found"

Another symptom of the error: I could not access the NAS admin pages through Internet Explorer on the Win 7 or 8 systems.

I spent days trying all the fixes proposed in ALL the online search results, including many and various registry hacks, security policy changes, Windows Credential Manager changes, anti-virus and firewall removal, clearing and reregistering DHCP and DNS caches, Router and NAS reconfiguration and permissions, updating drivers and firmware, various command line tools such as ipconfig, netsh, hosts file modifications, reinstalling the TCP-IP stack, etc., etc. and ad-nauseam.

The most popular suggestion by far was Network security: LAN Manager authentication level - change the authentication level to Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated (or the corresponding Registry Hack).

None of it worked.  After much trial and error, finally, the only thing that worked for my situation:

1) Network and Sharing Center - Change Advanced Sharing Settings

Turn everything to OFF on all profiles and options - Save changes and close

Then

2) Device Manager - Network Adapters - Uninstall Ethernet and Wireless adapters - Action, Scan for Hardware Changes to reinstall these devices and close Device Manger.

Then

3) Network and Sharing Center - Change Advanced Sharing Settings - Turn everything to ON for all profiles and options - Save changes and close.

NAS shares now work properly and I can access the NAS admin configuration pages.

Now you can restrict some access by setting some of the Advanced sharing settings.

So simple and easy after all...

Good Luck!

Laptop Connecting to Wrong AP

$

Hello!

I asked this question in the Network & Connection Microsoft forum and was told to post here for help.

My laptop isn't connecting to the nearest AP in my dorm room and instead choosing to connect to random APs that are much further away. As you can imagine, this means my wifi connection has been absolutely terrible. The signal fluctuates randomly from 1 bars, to 5 bars, and everywhere in between. I often get the ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED error page in my browser which makes me have to refresh the page and try again. I've tried forgetting and reconnecting to the university's network, enabling and disabling drivers, updating drivers, installing and reinstalling drivers, and even a windows reinstall. None of these have made any changes in my poor connection. This is on my university's wifi network, so I am unable to set up a router to fix the problem. I am in room 472 and the nearest AP is in room 474, which is literally right next door.

Last year I was in a different, older dorm building and I experienced no network connection problems whatsoever. Could this problem be because my laptop isn't compatible with the recent technology in my newer building?

I am at a complete loss of what I should do at this point. Please help!

[Windows Phone 8.1] Can't connect Windows Phone apps to wifi network with proxy authentication

Our school uses proxy that requires username/password authentication to connect on Wifi. Good thing is Windows Phone 8.1 has option to turn proxy on/off and sign in to proxy. The problem is after setting up the network connecting to it, my apps still can't connect to the network (some apps for example are Facebook app, Skype, other 3rd party apps). The IE and Windows App Store can connect to the network though. I am currently looking for 3rd party app that can provide global proxy authentication so I can connect my apps to the internet but I can't one.

DHCPclient service always changing DUID

After applying last windows updates to Windows 8 Enterprise Edition, value of DUID is always being changed.

So I would like to know what is causing this behavior within this new version of dhcpclient. Is there any new option to set so DUID is not changed at any service restart?

This is a problem for our infrastructure since we're using reserved dhcpv6 leases set by DUID value.

In this initial version it works right, so when Dhcpv6DUID register binary value is set there is no problem with future restarts of dhcpclient service. Details of installed dlls are as follow:

I'm seeing this logged very occasionally as a warning in the System Event Log.  Does it indicate something I should consider reconfiguring?  Is it transitory?

As far as I know, I was just using IE11 and listening to Pandora at the time of the most recent message.  Not sure but I don't think I was even watching videos at the time.  A speed test shows I have the full 21 megabit / 48 megabit speeds I'm expecting from our fiber service here.

Windows 8.1 cannot map to network drives

First off, this issue randomly happened out of nowhere. Nothing was changed on my system before this problem happened. I used to be able to access company server network drives no problem now I cannot.

I have seen other threads on here similar issues but not the same.

Below are some notes on my scenario and things I have done already to try and resolve it.

1. I can ping the server name and IP no problem, but cannot map it.

2. It is only local to my computer, my domain account can access them on other computers and our terminal server.

3. This same computer was an image of another windows 8.1 machine and that still runs no problem.

4. I have enabled netbios and network discovery.

5. Turned off windows firewall, even though I know that's not an issue because it was working before.

6. Anti-virus and other similar programs would not affect it.

7. Changed network connection ( different cable or cable connection somewhere else, priv wifi, etc)

8. I can RDP to the servers as well.

9. Windows updates have been run numerous times as well.

I don't know if there is any adapter or how virtual network drives work or are enabled, but if that exists maybe that's my issue?

I do have a very last resort scenario. I have a backup DR image of my system I could restore to if absolutely needed, but would very much like to not do that as it's about 3 months old and would take a while for me to configure things back to the way I have it now.

Please help!

Hello Everybody,

I have a question regarding my printer server.

I always access this printer through WEB UI by its IP Address..

I don't know why when i put the IP address on address bar of web browser , Firefox, and Enter.

I got this error regarding SSL:

SSL server probably obsolete.

ERR_SSL_FALLBACK_BEYOND_MINIMUM_VERSION

This is Internal IP, it's should not be relate SSL error:

also other printers i can access them through web browser with the same Range of IP..

Can you help me with that?

Best regards

Microsoft network server: Amount of idle time required before suspending session

Hi,

The setting described in the topic was set to 15 minutes on the workstation GPO. User complain that they get the following errors in Adobe InDesign:
The network connection was lost for the file*OpenedFile*.indd, or the file was modified by another process.

I think this setting is causing the issues.

More details about the setting: https://technet.microsoft.com/sv-se/library/cc776037(v=ws.10).aspx

My question is about the default settings on a workstation, what does "undefined" mean? What is default on a Win 8.1 machine? Should I disable the setting from the policy or set it to 99999 (effectively disabling it)?

Thanks

WPA security Types are missing after upgrading to Windows 8.1

After upgrading from Windows 8 Pro 64bit to Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit on my Sony Vaio Duoe 13, I could not find WPA security type while configuring Wireless network manually. (only WPA2 and 802.1X are available).

I have done a lot of troubleshootings like

1-Reinstall Wirless original driver

2-Updating the wireless driver to the latest

3-Uninstall and reinstall windows 8 then upgrading again to windows 8.1

But the same.

Is there any way to add WPA to the security type?
